“The Reverend E. D. Finney suggested to one of his elders, in the fall
of 1872, the propriety of preaching in the neighborhood of Fallston
occasionally on Sabbath afternoon. After some delay, he secured the use
of the barroom in an unoccupied hotel (belonging to Mr. James K.
Hamilton) situated at the crossing of Bel Air and Baltimore Pike with
the Magnolia Road, about three-fourths of a mile from Fallston.”
“Notice being given, Mr. Finney, preached his first sermon in the
barroom on the 17th of January, 1872 at three o’clock to a
good large and attentive audience. The room not being large enough for
the increasing audiences, a new church was soon talked (about).”
“In the month of June, 1873, a building committee was formed.
Accordingly, one and one half acres in a beautiful wooded grove and
most central to the congregation were given by Mr. James K. Hamilton,
and it was there that the church was erected – a house 26 feet by 45
feet at a total cost of $1,890.00.”
“In the middle of October 1873, the new church and the new schoolhouse
on the adjoining lot were completed. On the 23rd of
November1873 the new church was dedicated. The house was crowded – many
unable to get in. Divine services were held for ten days – preaching
every evening at seven and one-half. The meetings were solemn and
impressive and well attended.”
The Fallston Presbyterian
Church of Harford County, Maryland was formally organized on January 4,
1874. The Reverend E. D. Finney was unanimously elected stated supply
for one year at the salary of $150., to be paid quarterly. Mr. James C.
Robinson was duly elected as the first elder of the church. Reverend
Finney faithfully served the church. Reverend Finney faithfully served
the church until May 13, 1891. From that time until 1961, ministers
from Franklinville or Chestnut Grove churches served. In 1961, Fallston
Presbyterian Church officially separated from the Franklinville church
and had its first full-time pastor, the Reverend Mr. Lawrence H.
Jongewaard. The new sanctuary, given impetus by a bequest from Mary
Sewell, was built in 1985-86 and dedicated in February 1987. Fallston
Presbyterian continues to be a friendly place to worship.
